Resolution 6: We must defend Julian Assange

This is the sixth of seven resolutions unanimously adopted at the first national convention of the Socialist Equality Party (Australia) which was held from 6 to 9 April 2012 in Sydney.

1. This Congress condemns the intimate involvement of the Labour government in the plot by the Obama administration to throw Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in jail. By refusing to defend the basic legal rights of a citizen from Australia, the Gillard Government has played a crucial role in this operation against him.

2. The persecution of Assange and WikiLeaks is part of a global assault against political rights and democratic principles, whose purpose is to intimidate and silence the growing popular opposition to the program of militarism and austerity imposed on workers around the world.

3. Internal e-mails of U.S. private intelligence agency Stratfor revealed that the Obama administration has prepared since December 2010, a secret indictment against Assange by a grand jury. Held in Britain for over a year, it is facing extradition to Sweden on sexual assault charges baseless. This setup is designed to pave the way for the extradition of Assange to the United States, where he would be tried under the Espionage Act, reactionary law of 1917 on espionage.

4. Treatment awaits WikiLeaks founder is already imposed on Bradley Manning soldier, alleged WikiLeaks source. Manning languishing in U.S. military prisons for nearly two years, where he was subjected to isolation, forced nudity, the sleep deprivation and other forms of torture. The purpose of this treatment is to force them to negotiate a guilty plea as a basis to charge the U.S. government against Assange.

5. Washington is campaign to vilify and destroy Assange WikiLeaks because the site has highlighted thousands of documents detailing the murders by U.S. civilians and complicity in torture in Afghanistan and Iraq, and many other crimes before hidden world population. Among the diplomatic cables made public, there are those that reveal the close involvement of the Embassy of the United States with the powerbrokers of the Australian Labor Party who chased Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister in mid-2010 install Julia Gillard.

6. Gillard supported the persecution of Assange in the first hour. In December 2010, when the grand jury was convened secretly, she said publicly, without any evidence or legal justification, that the publication of diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks United States was "illegal. "The government has done everything possible to help the American operation, allowing even an investigation of the Federal Police and Australian intelligence services to find anything they could find to try to compromise Assange.

7. Throwing Assange to the wolves, the Labour Party seeks to cover up the crimes of Washington and the role played by Australian governments in these crimes, as well as hide all the machinations of U.S. imperialism and its implications for the working class . The Gillard government plays a no less pernicious than the Howard government when it was supported by the Bush administration detention of two Australian citizens, David Hicks and Mamdouh Habib, alongside more than 650 other prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in defiance of the Geneva Conventions and international law.

8. Operations against these three men are part of the fraudulent "war against terrorism" ongoing. Starting with the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the "war" served as a pretext to conduct military aggression abroad and impose an avalanche of police state measures at the domestic level. Just as the Obama administration has intensified the large attack against the democratic rights previously launched under the Bush administration, the Labour government has intensified and institutionalized authoritarian measures "anti-terrorism" initiated by his predecessor.

9. The bipartisan attack against democratic rights was approved by the entire political establishment, including the Greens. Indeed supported by the Greens, the minority Labour government has maintained and strengthened all the draconian measures adopted since 2000 - detention without trial, secret interrogations, legislation on the use of the army, unprecedented military interventions in Aboriginal communities in the Territory North and anti-refugee increasingly severe.

10. This review demonstrates that there is not the slightest meaningful engagement within Australian ruling circles in favor of democratic rights and legal. Eliciting barely a whisper in the media, the Labour Party has repeatedly blocked any legal action challenging the participation of Canberra operations torture, renditions and detentions at Guantánamo Bay conducted by the United States, as well as against deportations and arbitrary prohibitions mass conducted by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation - ASIO (Australian intelligence services) against refugees and seized passport Australian citizens.

11. The worsening crisis of the capitalist system is the cause of these measures. It is becoming increasingly impossible for the ruling elites to impose, through democratic means, militarism, inequalities and the current attacks against the social conditions and labor.

12. This Congress welcomes the courageous stand taken by Assange and WikiLeaks and fight to defend them. Assange and WikiLeaks have helped to unveil the eyes of millions of people around the world, actions and true nature of the governments of the United States and other countries around the world, including Canberra.

13. This Congress demands the immediate release of Assange and Manning. We insist on the fact that the defense of democratic rights is inseparable from the struggle to mobilize the working class against the Labour government, direct accomplice in the conspiracy against them in Washington. Democratic rights can be defended behind the façade of parliament decrepit, but only by the struggle for a workers' government committed to reorganize society on the basis of the needs of humanity and not for private profit, and committed to establish a true democracy in all aspects of economic, political and social.
